Jesus Is My Teacher
By Kris Headington
A man came to Him by night, and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that
You have come from God as a teacher, for no one can do these
signs that You do unless God is with him. John 3:2
My first full-time teaching job when I came to Iowa was in a small district in Jackson County, one of Iowa’s poorest at that time. I was working on my Master’s Degree in reading and was hired as a special reading teacher to work with students who were below level in their classrooms. Armed with my new-found knowledge about reading and my youthful arrogance about my ability, I was certain I alone could improve my students’ reading scores. Plan after plan failed as I tried to engage my students and inspire them to love reading as much as I did.
Finally, in desperation I prayed, “Lord, why won’t these kids read?” In the quietness of my heart, the Lord answered, “You do not love my children.”
I began to cry as I realized He was right. I was trying to teach them, but I had trouble loving them. They were dirty sometimes, smelled, came from poverty, and had parents who did not care about school.
I said, “Lord, show me how to love them. I am willing to learn.” Boy, did He answer that prayer! I began to see them as the sweet, delightful, funny, and yes, smart little people they were. That’s when we really started learning and my program took off.
What challenge do you need to talk with Jesus about today? Ask your Teacher to reveal His wisdom regarding your plan of action.
Lord, give me a teachable spirit. Help me to always be willing to learn what You are so able and willing to teach me.
